“If Elections Were Rational, Peter Obi Is the Only One Who Should Be Elected” — Sam Amadi

Dr. Sam Amadi, former chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thoughts, has condemned what he described as an escalating wave of unjustified attacks on Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.

In a post shared on his official X account, Amadi criticized senior figures in the current administration for frequently targeting Obi, despite his unwavering focus on Nigeria’s deepening socio-economic crisis. He cited recent criticisms from the Presidency, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Senate President Godswill Akpabio as part of a disturbing pattern of political distraction.

Obi recently described the state of the nation by saying “the labour of our heroes past has gone in vain,” a reflection that drew a strong response from Akpabio, who accused the former governor of Anambra State of dishonouring Nigeria’s founding fathers. Similarly, Sanwo-Olu lashed out at Obi for his comments made during a recent foreign engagement where he questioned Nigeria’s economic direction. The Presidency has also dismissed Obi’s reform proposals in previous statements.

Amadi countered these attacks by highlighting Obi’s consistent focus on policy and reform rather than personal politics. “If elections were a purely rational exercise, Peter Obi is so far the only candidate who ought to be elected,” he stated, emphasizing that Obi remains committed to a vision of national transformation rooted in accountability, prudence, and structural reform.
