Obi Defends Party Switches, Signals Possible Exit from ADC

Peter Obi has said he could leave the African Democratic Congress (ADC) if its internal processes become compromised, while defending his history of moving between political parties.

Speaking on Prime Time on Arise Television on Monday, the former Anambra State governor said his past defections were driven by principle rather than political convenience.

Obi rejected criticism that he frequently exits parties instead of addressing internal challenges, arguing that he refuses to remain in systems he considers flawed or unethical.

He explained that his departure from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) followed disagreements with his successor as governor, adding that he chose to leave rather than allow tensions to escalate.

On his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi cited what he described as irregularities in the party’s internal processes, particularly during primaries.

According to him, he could not participate in what he characterised as transactional politics.

Obi also addressed his time in the Labour Party, linking his departure to internal disputes and delays in the enforcement of a Supreme Court of Nigeria ruling. He alleged that the situation was influenced by external forces and suggested he was being drawn into a dysfunctional structure.

On his current position in the ADC, Obi said he remains committed but would not hesitate to speak out or take action if similar issues emerge.

He stressed that adherence to credible processes remains central to his political decisions, maintaining that he would continue to act in line with his principles regardless of how often that requires changing parties.

Obi also denied any involvement in electoral malpractice or attempts to influence judicial outcomes, stating that he has not engaged in vote manipulation or improper dealings within the judiciary.
