“I Will Introduce Sharia Law in Oyo If the People Demand It,” Says APC Governorship Hopeful Adebayo Shittu
Adebayo Shittu, a former minister of communications and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says he would introduce Sharia law in Oyo State if it reflects the will of the people.
Shittu made the remarks during an interview on Naija Unfiltered, a podcast produced by Symfoni, where he was asked to comment on renewed debates over the possible introduction of Sharia law in states in the South-West.
Responding to concerns raised by the interviewer, who cited alleged human rights violations by Hisbah operatives in some northern states, Shittu questioned the basis of the opposition.
“How does Sharia law, if institutionalised, affect you as a Christian? How does it affect you negatively?” he asked.
He argued that resistance to Sharia law is often driven by religious intolerance, adding that Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion.
“The constitution allows it. You are talking out of intolerance for religion,” Shittu said.
When asked directly whether he would introduce Sharia law if elected governor of Oyo State in 2027, Shittu said such a decision would depend on public demand.
“If the people ask for it. Even the constitution says it should be established whenever it is demanded,” he said. “If there is Sharia in any community, no Christian can be forced to go under Sharia.”
The comments come against the backdrop of controversy that emerged in late 2024 over plans to establish Sharia arbitration panels in parts of the South-West. In December of that year, the Oyo State chapter of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria announced plans to set up a Sharia court in the state. The move sparked public backlash, leading the council to suspend the initiative indefinitely.
Nigeria operates a plural legal system that combines common law, customary law, and Islamic law. The constitution provides for the operation of Sharia and customary courts, particularly in civil matters. Several northern states have formally integrated Sharia law into their legal frameworks.
Shittu recently declared his intention to contest the 2027 Oyo governorship election, describing himself as the most qualified aspirant for the position.
