“South-South Must Deliver Highest Votes for Tinubu in 2027” — Godswill Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on the South-South geopolitical zone to secure the highest number of votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Akpabio made the appeal on Wednesday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South zonal congress held in Asaba. The event was attended by governors from the six states in the region.

He credited the Tinubu administration and the APC for increasing the zone’s political relevance, noting that the emergence of a Senate President from the region marked a shift after more than four decades.

Akpabio also pointed to the party’s expanding presence in the South-South. According to him, the APC controlled only one state in the region in 2023 but now has all six governors aligned with the party.

He urged party members to translate that political consolidation into electoral results, framing the 2027 election as a test of the region’s contribution to the party’s national performance.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori described the region as central to Nigeria’s political trajectory, noting that the congress reflected growing unity within the APC in the South-South.

Oborevwori said the party must maintain internal cohesion, strengthen its grassroots structures, and sustain engagement at the local level.

The congress concluded with the selection of zonal executives through a consensus process. Victor Giadom was returned as national vice-chairman for the South-South zone, alongside other officials elected into key positions.
