FG Increases Civil Servants’ Allowances, Approves New Exit Package
The Federal Government has approved increases in allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants, alongside a new exit package for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, announced the measures during a briefing in Abuja on Friday, saying the reforms are aimed at improving workers’ earnings, strengthening welfare support and enhancing retirement benefits.
According to her, the review covers workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), with revised allowances structured across grade levels for both junior and senior officers.
Walson-Jack said nearly all allowances captured in the Public Service Rules have been reviewed as part of the changes.
Among the key measures is the approval of 100 per cent Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending approved training programmes, including those held within their duty stations.
“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she said.
The government also introduced an exit benefit scheme for civil servants retiring under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Under the arrangement, retirees will receive an exit package equivalent to 100 per cent of their full emoluments, in addition to their pensions. The scheme takes effect from January 1, 2026.
Walson-Jack said the package is designed to improve financial security in retirement, adding that public servants should leave service with adequate support.
The Federal Government also confirmed the implementation of the Employee Compensation Scheme, which provides financial protection for workers affected by job-related injuries or death.
The reforms come amid sustained calls from labour unions for improved conditions of service, as rising living costs continue to affect workers.
They also follow an earlier Federal Government approval of salary increases ranging from 25 to 35 per cent for workers on six consolidated salary structures, including CONPSS, CONRAISS, CONPOSS, CONPASS, CONICCS and CONAFSS.
Officials say the latest measures are intended to address compensation gaps, improve morale across the public service and strengthen support for workers during and after service.
