In a remarkable act of bravery and quick thinking, Nigerian Army (NA) soldiers from the 81 Division NA thwarted a tragedy as they prevented a desperate suicide attempt by Mrs. Francesca Spark, who had plunged into the Lagos Lagoon near the 81 Division Officers’ Mess.
The Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Olabisi Ayeni, officially confirmed this heroic rescue operation in a statement released on Monday. He detailed how the troops of the 65 Battalion NA, stationed at the Officers’ Mess, spotted Mrs. Spark just in time, and, drawing upon their military riverine skills and resourcefulness, managed to save her from the perilous situation.
After the successful rescue, Mrs. Spark received immediate first aid and medical care from the battalion’s skilled medical team. Subsequently, the family was contacted, and she was safely reunited with her husband, Mr. Spark Oghene Ovie, who resides in Awoyaya, Lagos.
Major General Muhammed Takuti Usman, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 81 Division NA, commended the soldiers for their alertness, ingenuity, courage, and gallantry during the critical operation. The GOC emphasized the significance of soldiers employing their disaster management training in a situation that could have resulted in the loss of a fellow citizen’s life.
Major General Usman explained that such operations fall under the category of military actions during emergencies or natural disasters and reaffirmed that troops are well-prepared to support lead agencies during such crises. He further assured residents of the NA’s unwavering commitment to protecting both them and their properties, even during challenging emergencies.
The remarkable rescue operation serves as a testament to the dedication and readiness of Nigerian Army soldiers to serve and protect the nation, even in the most challenging circumstances.
