Gay Nigerian Man Dies After Being Pushed From Two-Storey Building in Port Harcourt

A gay Nigerian man identified simply as Hilary has died after reportedly being pushed from a two-storey building in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in what has been described as a homophobic attack.

According to Nigerian gay pastor and activist Jide Macaulay, who shared the tragic story online, Hilary was lured into a meeting under false pretence by a group of men who later attacked him. During the assault, the perpetrators allegedly threw him from the building, leaving him with severe spinal cord injuries.

Hilary was rushed to the hospital, where he fought for his life but later succumbed to his injuries.

In his statement, Macaulay described the incident as another painful reminder of the violence faced by Nigeria’s queer community. He noted that Hilary’s death marks the second reported kito-related death — referring to attacks where queer individuals are lured and assaulted — in the country within two weeks.

“Hilary’s light will not be forgotten. May his memory strengthen our resolve for justice and peace,” Macaulay wrote.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community and human rights advocates have expressed deep grief over Hilary’s death, calling for justice and greater protection for queer Nigerians, who continue to face discrimination and violence.
