Edo 2024: You Have 24 Hours to Explain ‘I’ll Provide Insecurity if Elected’ Comment, Group Tells APC’s Okpebhelo
Senator Monday Okpebhelo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Edo State, has come under fire after a campaign blunder where he mistakenly promised to “provide insecurity” if elected. The slip occurred during a rally at Ovia North Local Government Area, where Okpebhelo addressed concerns raised by Adams Oshiomhole, a senator representing Edo North, regarding the state’s security situation.
A video of the incident quickly went viral, showing Okpebhelo making the statement while Oshiomhole, standing beside him, signaled the error. The candidate corrected himself, but the damage was done, sparking widespread reactions.
In response, The Edo Salvation Group (ESG), a local advocacy organization, has issued a 24-hour ultimatum for Okpebhelo to clarify his statement. The group, in a statement signed by its national coordinator Imman Ekpe, expressed deep concern over the viral video and criticized the APC candidate’s repeated campaign missteps. According to the ESG, the gaffe underscores Okpebhelo’s perceived lack of capacity for leadership, as he has made other questionable remarks, including suggesting transformers as a sole solution to electricity problems.
“While we pardon him for the error, we believe this incident raises serious questions about his suitability for office,” the ESG stated. “If he does not go on television within 24 hours to explain what he meant, we will be forced to publicly disclaim his candidacy.”
With the September 21 election fast approaching, this incident has placed Senator Okpebhelo’s campaign under increased scrutiny as voters question his readiness for office.
