Discontent Grows in Mbah’s Cabinet as Enugu Commissioners Required to Apply for Meetings with Governor: Sources

Discontent is reportedly growing within the cabinet of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, as commissioners and aides are now required to submit written applications to secure a meeting with him, according to top government officials.

Sources indicate that Governor Mbah has stopped answering calls from his aides and associates, further exacerbating tensions. One anonymous government official accused the governor of adopting an autocratic approach just one year into his administration.

“We now have to write applications to see the governor for any private or official matters. If we’re not comfortable with this, we must wait until the weekly Executive Council meeting,” a source disclosed. These applications must be routed through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia. The source also mentioned that visitors can only see the governor through Zoom, claiming he has surrounded himself with a close-knit group, reminiscent of his mentor, former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani.

A senior member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu lamented that Governor Mbah has also distanced himself from party leaders. “Since his election victory in 2023, he has avoided meeting with party leaders at all levels, disregarding party structures,” the party source said. The governor’s reliance on a new team has reportedly sidelined those who supported his election bid.

The source added, “We are preparing for the party’s ward congress, yet he has not met with the party leadership. He seems to believe he can secure enough funds to buy influence or use the Catholic Church in Enugu State as his political base for the next election.”

Additionally, there are claims that those who heavily invested in Mbah’s campaign have been marginalized. One individual, who allegedly invested hundreds of millions, saw his business demolished as a supposed “reward” for his support.
