Photos: Troops Repel Suspected IPOB/ESN Attack in Enugu, Recover Explosives
Troops of Sector 1, Operation UDO KA, working alongside other security agencies, have repelled an attack by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), during an intelligence-led operation in Imezi Owa community, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The operation, carried out on May 6, followed intelligence reports and the tracking of suspected terrorist collaborators within the community.
According to the military, troops advancing on foot towards the area came under fire from a building believed to have been used as a hideout by the suspects. Three security personnel sustained injuries during the attack.
“Despite the attack, troops maintained operational dominance, foiled the attack and secured the general area,” the military said in a statement issued on Thursday.
The injured personnel were evacuated to a military medical facility where they are currently receiving treatment.
The military further disclosed that during the exchange of gunfire, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) allegedly stored inside the building detonated, sparking a fire that destroyed the structure.
Security operatives later recovered additional IEDs, improvised hand grenades and what was described as a shrine used for ritual activities within the area.
“The shrine was thoroughly combed and destroyed to prevent continued usage for criminal activities and to safeguard the community members,” the statement added.
One suspect identified as a collaborator was arrested during follow-up operat
ions around the community. The suspect, alongside recovered items, has been handed over to the Nigerian Police, Ezeagu Division, for further investigation.
The Headquarters Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, reassured residents that ongoing security operations across the region are being conducted professionally and with the protection of lives and property as a priority.
The military also urged residents of Imezi Owa and neighbouring communities to remain calm, avoid harbouring criminal elements and continue cooperating with security agencies.
“Security forces remain resolute in their determination to build peace in the region and will continue to dismantle criminal networks and deny terrorists any freedom of action,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army.
