INEC Receives Petition to Recall Lawmaker from House of Representatives
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received an official petition from constituents of the Kaura Namoda-Birnin Magaji federal constituency in Zamfara State, seeking the recall of Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji from the House of Representatives.
In a letter addressed to INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the constituents cited poor representation as the primary reason for their decision, invoking Section 69 of the Nigerian Constitution.
The recall initiative, spearheaded by the Coalition for Sustainable Democracy, was officially acknowledged and stamped at INEC Headquarters in Abuja. The coalition, represented by its chairman Hon. Bello Mahmud Birnin Magaji and secretary Comrade Mustapha Ibrahim, has begun collecting signatures from registered voters in the constituency. These signatures will be verified by INEC, potentially leading to a referendum on Jaji’s recall.
In a statement, the coalition leaders emphasized the importance of the recall effort: “We urge eligible voters in the constituency to turn up en masse for this crucial civic exercise. The urgent need to recall Hon. Jaji cannot be overemphasised, as he failed woefully to represent his constituency at a time when his service is most needed.”
