ADC Youths Plan Protests at INEC Offices in Lagos, Ogun, Jigawa Over #AmupitanMustGo Campaign
Youth members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are set to stage coordinated protests today at offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) across Lagos, Ogun, and Jigawa states under the hashtag #AmupitanMustGo.
The party’s national youth leader, Balarabe Rufai, announced the mobilisation in a post on X on Monday, sharing protest flyers tagged “Operation Occupy INEC” for Lagos and Ogun.
In Lagos, protesters are expected to gather at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) by 8 a.m. before moving toward the INEC office. In Ogun State, the demonstration is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) office in Abeokuta. Details for Jigawa were not immediately confirmed at the time of reporting.
As of Monday morning, there was no independent confirmation that the Lagos protest had begun at the INEC office.
In earlier communications on Thursday, Rufai said ADC youths had already staged a protest at the INEC office in Lagos. He described the action as a “peaceful occupation” aimed at pressing demands for institutional accountability.
According to him, protesters called for respect for due process, immediate resignation of INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, and reinstatement of leadership aligned with Senator David Mark.
He wrote that the action was “a call for accountability, not chaos,” adding that citizens have a responsibility to respond when institutions fail to act fairly.
The current mobilisation follows an earlier demonstration in Abuja on April 8, where opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, ADC national chairman David Mark, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, ADC national secretary Rauf Aregbesola, former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and former Kogi senator Dino Melaye, took part in a protest also directed at INEC.
The demonstrations come after INEC’s decision on April 1 to de-recognise factions within the ADC, referencing a March 12 Court of Appeal ruling that ordered parties to maintain the status quo in an ongoing leadership dispute.
Protesters have accused the electoral body of bias and are calling for the removal of INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan, a position the commission has not publicly responded to in detail.
