Delta Killings: Troops Occupy Okuama, Raze More Buildings

In the aftermath of the recent killings of military personnel on a rescue mission to Okuama community in Delta State, troops deployed to the area continue to raze buildings, intensifying the ongoing conflict. According to a community source, the military presence remains strong in Okuama, with numerous houses being either razed or demolished.

Responding to the escalating violence, the Nigerian military deployed armoured vehicles to Bomadi, the headquarters of Bomadi council. This move comes in the wake of President Bola Tinubu’s directive to the military high command to apprehend the perpetrators of the attacks. President Tinubu emphasized that those responsible for the “unconscionable crime” against the military personnel would face justice.

Political figures and community leaders have condemned the killings, with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori labeling them as “despicable” and “alien to the culture of Deltans.” Additionally, the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.

Amidst the chaos, Senator Ede Dafinone urged all parties involved to cease hostilities for the sake of humanity. Similarly, the Urhobo Media Practitioners Advocacy Group (UMPAG) called for an independent investigation into the killings and the arrest of the culprits.

As the conflict persists, concerns about a humanitarian crisis loom large. Indigenes fleeing Okuama community, particularly women and children, seek refuge in neighboring areas. Meanwhile, the military has launched a counteroperation to apprehend the suspects responsible for the attacks.

Renowned figures, including former Governor Peter Obi and human rights lawyer Femi Falana, have called for immediate investigations and justice for the slain military personnel. Falana specifically urged the government to halt reprisal attacks and ensure compensation for victims.

The situation in Okuama community remains tense as the military intensifies its efforts to quell the violence and bring the perpetrators to justice.
