“Call IPOB Terrorist Organisation Again And Get Sued,” Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyers Tell Nigerian Presidency, Army, Police, Media Houses

Nnamdi Kanu’s legal team has issued a stern warning to the Nigerian Presidency, the Nigerian Army, the Police, and media houses to cease referring to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organization or face litigation. The directive comes in a legal notice dated June 7, 2024, and signed by Aloy Ejimakor, Esq., representing Kanu’s legal team.

The notice asserts that continuing to label IPOB as a terrorist group will result in legal consequences. It highlights that a High Court ruling has deemed the proscription of IPOB as illegal, discriminatory, and unconstitutional.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Legal Team is under firm instructions from our Client to issue this final warning to all persons and institutions still referring to IPOB as a terrorist organization,” the statement read. It emphasized that no evidence has been provided to substantiate claims that IPOB has engaged in terrorist activities.

The legal team pointed to a ruling by Justice A.O. Onovo of the Enugu State High Court, which declared the proscription of IPOB as a terrorist organization illegal and unconstitutional. This judgement underscores that IPOB members, primarily from Nigeria’s Igbo and Eastern Nigerian ethnic groups, are entitled to their political opinion of self-determination.

The court’s judgment mandates the Nigerian government to issue apologies and pay damages amounting to eight billion naira for the infringement of Kanu’s and IPOB members’ fundamental rights.

The legal team demands that the Nigerian Presidency, Army, Police, and media houses cease and desist from labeling IPOB as a terrorist organization immediately. Failure to comply will result in robust litigation measures.
