Belgium-Sweden Match Abandoned Amid Suspected Terrorist Attack: Fans Killed Near Stadium
The highly anticipated 2024 European Championship qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden was abruptly abandoned following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels on Monday evening. UEFA, the European football governing body, officially confirmed the grim news.
In an official statement, UEFA declared, “Following a suspected terrorist attack in Brussels this evening, it has been decided, after consultation with the two teams and the local police authorities, that the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying match between Belgium and Sweden is abandoned.”
The tragic incident unfolded just before the match’s kickoff at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels. Initially, the game commenced, but during the halftime break, players from both teams reached a unanimous decision to not return to the pitch for the second half, forcing an abrupt end to the encounter.
The heart-wrenching event occurred a mere three miles away from the stadium, prompting authorities to impose a lockdown on the venue, where thousands of Belgian and Swedish fans had gathered in anticipation. UEFA conveyed that “further communication will be made in due course.”
Reports from local media suggest that the assailant conducted the shooting in the name of the terrorist organization Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Prosecutors have officially categorized these shootings as acts of terrorism.
As the world grapples with this grim reality, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and local sources have confirmed that the victims of this horrific attack were Swedish nationals.
Belgium, along with other Western nations, has elevated its terrorism alert level to the highest tier. This action is believed to be connected to the ongoing conflict between the State of Israel and the terror group Hamas, which escalated following recent attacks in Israel.
In light of these developments, nations worldwide, particularly those that have expressed support for Israel, are now bracing for the possibility of retaliatory actions by individuals sympathetic to Hamas.
