Abia Government Grants 90-Day Moratorium for Aba Property Owners to Renew Building Permits
The Abia State Government has announced a 90-day moratorium for property owners in Aba to renew or acquire building permits, in a move aimed at preventing unnecessary losses and promoting urban development. The moratorium, which runs from September 10 to December 9, 2024, was introduced by Governor Alex Otti to provide relief for property owners with unapproved buildings.
Uche Ukeje, Director-General of the Greater Aba Development Agency, made the announcement during a press conference in Aba. He explained that the moratorium is part of broader efforts to establish a Master Plan for Aba, a city that has historically lacked structured urban planning.
“The governor, in his wisdom, has offered a 90-day moratorium for anyone with a commercial or residential building that was constructed without approval to regularize their documentation without penalties,” Mr. Ukeje stated.
He clarified that the primary aim of the initiative is to gather essential data on existing structures rather than generate revenue for the state. This data will be used to guide future urban planning and development efforts in the region.
“Without accurate data, it’s difficult to plan for hospitals, schools, and other facilities. This exercise will give the government the information needed to better serve the people of Aba,” he added.
Property owners are encouraged to visit Town Planning Authorities in Aba North, Aba South, Osisioma, Ugwunagbo, and Obingwa to obtain the costs for their building permits. Payments are to be made directly into the Abia State Government’s account, with proof of payment required for further documentation.
In a bid to prevent corruption during the process, Mr. Ukeje warned against bribery, urging property owners not to pay any money to unofficial accounts or offer bribes to officials. He also disclosed that three hotlines have been established for the public to report any officials attempting to exploit property owners.
The moratorium is seen as a significant step towards regularizing Aba’s urban development and ensuring that property owners comply with building regulations without facing undue financial burdens.
