“Why would I oppose Tinubu’s re-election bid? I am also seeking a second term” — Otti

Governor Alex Otti has said he will not oppose President Bola Tinubu if he contests for re-election in 2027, stating that his own political position makes such opposition inappropriate.

He spoke on Friday during his monthly media briefing in Abia State, where he addressed questions about his stance on national politics and the next election cycle.

Otti explained that he is not a presidential candidate and therefore has no basis to challenge Tinubu’s return bid.

“I am not in a position to oppose the candidacy of the President. I am not running for President,” he said.

He linked his position to his own ambition for a second term as governor, arguing that it would be inconsistent to deny another elected officeholder a similar opportunity.

“Why would I oppose his presidency? I am also seeking a second term. Would it be right for me to say someone else should not have theirs?” he said.

He also dismissed interpretations of his comments as party-driven, saying governance at all levels requires coordination between federal, state, and local authorities, regardless of political differences.

According to him, policy disagreements may occur, but once decisions are made within the system, they should be implemented without disruption.

Otti also addressed the status of his party, the Labour Party, saying internal disputes have been settled following a Supreme Court decision recognized by INEC. He said the party is rebuilding structures and preparing for upcoming congresses and a national convention.
