In a swift and courageous response, youths from Umuokanne in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State rescued a kidnapped trader, Mrs. Obiageli Oguguo, from a forest in Oforola on Monday.

Mrs. Oguguo was abducted early in the morning while on her way to the market for her garri trade. Witnesses immediately alerted the traditional ruler of Umuokanne, Eze (Dr.) Chiedoziem Nwokoma, who mobilized the local security team. The youths quickly organized themselves and launched a rescue mission, successfully freeing the woman unharmed.

Recounting her ordeal, Mrs. Oguguo, who hails from Ilile, said she was taken around 6 a.m. by three armed men. She expressed relief at her rescue, confirming she was freed the same day, March 3, 2025.

Eze Nwokoma, who also serves as the chairman of the Security and Conflict Resolution Committee of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, praised the youths for their bravery. He explained that the abduction occurred while the woman was on a motorbike heading to the market. Describing the community’s dedication to security, the traditional ruler emphasized that the youths’ swift action was necessary to prevent further criminal activities in the area.

“As a former Assistant Commissioner of Police, I am fully committed to ensuring the safety of our people. Our youths acted decisively, combing the forest to rescue the woman. Their commitment proves that Umuokanne is not a place for criminals,” he said.

Eze Nwokoma assured residents that security efforts would continue to prevent further kidnappings. He issued a strong warning to criminals, stating that Umuokanne remains the safest place in Imo State and that crime would not be tolerated. He urged those involved in criminal activities to abandon such acts, reinforcing that the community would remain vigilant in safeguarding lives and property.
