Popular Nigerian Socialite Arrested on Wedding Day Admits to $3 Million Fraud in U.S.
Nigerian socialite Darlington Akporugo is facing up to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to a multimillion-dollar romance scam that targeted elderly victims across the United States. The 47-year-old was arrested just hours before his wedding in early 2024 following a lengthy investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Akporugo admitted in a U.S. District Court in Texas to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud, as well as aiding and abetting in an elaborate scheme that defrauded over 25 victims. According to ICE, most of those affected were either retired or elderly individuals who were manipulated into handing over large sums of money.
Authorities described the operation as a sophisticated scam in which Akporugo and his associates created fake identities on social media, primarily Facebook, to befriend and deceive victims. Once trust was established, they convinced victims to invest in nonexistent businesses or send money for fabricated personal emergencies. The funds were then deposited into accounts controlled by Akporugo and his associates before being transferred overseas.
In addition to direct cash and wire transfers, Akporugo also admitted to persuading victims to open lines of credit in his name and, in at least one case, purchase a luxury vehicle for his personal use. ICE officials praised the victims who came forward, stating that their cooperation was instrumental in exposing the scam and bringing those responsible to justice.
Akporugo, who is in the U.S. illegally, remains in custody ahead of his sentencing on June 6. After serving his prison term, he is expected to be deported.
