Anambra Community Leader Set to Testify in Land Dispute Case Killed at Home by Unknown Assailants

Tragedy struck in Umudioka village, Awka, as an 83-year-old community leader, Chief Michael Nwobu, was brutally murdered in his residence at 27 Okolobu Street by unknown assailants. The incident occurred last Sunday when the perpetrators gained access to his home while his family members were away at church.

Chief Nwobu’s first son, Mr. Nnaemeka Nwobu, who resides in South Korea, expressed his grief and suspicions regarding the attack. He revealed that his father was scheduled to appear as a witness in a land dispute case at the High Court in Awka on March 5, just days after his murder on March 2. He stated that his father was stabbed multiple times, with the attackers nearly severing his head. He believes hired cultists may have been responsible for the killing.

“The Nigeria Police Command in Awka is still investigating the circumstances surrounding his murder. They have not said anything for now,” he said. “I am not happy about the killing of my father, the way he died, and I can’t imagine how he struggled to survive when they were killing him. I want justice from the police and the government over the killing of this innocent man. My late father, Chief Michael Chinweze Nnaemeka Nwobu, was a man of justice. May God help us.”

Another son of the deceased, Nnaemeka Kene Joseph, also raised suspicions in a statement to the police. He pointed to family members involved in a legal dispute with his father and alleged there had been threats to overthrow his leadership of the family. Additionally, he mentioned some tenants who were present in the house at the time of the attack.

The Anambra State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing, but no official statement has been released so far.
