Why We Deployed Operatives to Lagos Assembly – DSS
The Department of State Services (DSS) has clarified the reason for its presence at the Lagos State House of Assembly, stating that its deployment was in response to an official request from the lawmakers seeking security reinforcement at the complex.
Amid growing concerns over the security situation at the Assembly, including the sealing of offices belonging to the Speaker and his Deputy, the DSS emphasized that its operatives were not there to interfere but to fulfill a security mandate. The agency explained that the Assembly had formally requested security support through a letter dated February 14, 2025, citing potential threats to the legislative body.
According to the DSS, the request stemmed from intelligence suggesting a possible attempt to forcefully reinstate the impeached Speaker on February 18, 2025. The agency warned that such a move could escalate tensions and pose a security risk within the Assembly premises.
The statement from the DSS referenced the letter signed by Acting Clerk of the Assembly, Mr. A.T.B. Ottun, which was addressed to the DSS Director in Lagos and other security agencies in the state. The letter specifically highlighted concerns over the impeached Speaker’s planned return, stating that it posed a threat to the safety of lawmakers and the Assembly as a whole. It requested heightened security measures starting from Sunday, February 16, 2025, including increased personnel presence and strict access control within and around the complex.
Reassuring the public, the DSS reiterated that its presence at the Assembly was solely to ensure peace and stability, in accordance with the lawmakers’ request. The agency affirmed its commitment to upholding law and order while maintaining the security of government institutions.
