Kaduna-Based Commentator Sani ‘Waspapping’ Arrested by DSS
Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested social commentator Sani Waspapping, known on X as “Sarki,” according to sources familiar with the incident.
The arrest reportedly took place on Friday evening in Kaduna. Individuals who spoke to SaharaReporters said DSS operatives detained Waspapping around the NEPA Roundabout area. A friend who was with him at the time was also picked up but was later released.
As of Tuesday, authorities have not publicly stated the reason for the arrest, and Waspapping’s whereabouts remain unclear.
Some friends and associates claim the detention may be connected to comments he made online about the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. However, this claim has not been independently verified.
The arrest has triggered calls from supporters and online users demanding his release and urging authorities to respect freedom of expression.
In a Facebook post, Yusuf Ahmed Snup questioned the basis of the detention, writing that every Nigerian has the right to express opinions without fear of arrest.
Another source, AbdulSalam Ahmad, said attempts were initially made to resolve the situation quietly after some individuals indicated they were mediating with authorities. However, he said Waspapping had not been released several days after the arrest and was believed to have been moved to an undisclosed location.
Ahmad also said a group of lawyers is being assembled to formally contact the DSS and seek clarification on the legal grounds for the detention.
Supporters are calling on security agencies to either release Waspapping or charge him in court if there are allegations against him. They argue that any investigation should follow established legal procedures under Nigeria’s constitution.
