Why Obi Visited Abure, LP National Secretariat – Spokesperson
Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), visited the party’s national secretariat in Abuja as part of ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party. This visit was not an endorsement of any specific faction, but rather a move towards unity and peace, according the Obi spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko.
In a statement released by Tanko, Obi emphasized his commitment to unifying the party. He stated that his goal was to bring everyone together to build a strong, cohesive family within the LP, rather than supporting any individual group’s interests.
Obi’s visit included consultations with key stakeholders, such as the political arms of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). On Wednesday, he met with the leadership of the NLC/TUC political commission, represented by Titus Amba and Chris Uyot, who also expressed their desire for peace within the party.
During these meetings, Obi underscored the importance of reconciling different positions peacefully to foster an inclusive and united Labour Party. He thanked the NLC/TUC leadership for their understanding and looked forward to a productive working relationship.
This visit comes amid ongoing disputes within the LP, particularly concerning the leadership of Julius Abure, who was re-elected as national chairman in March at the party’s national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, despite opposition from the NLC.
The Labour Party continues to navigate internal conflicts with the aim of achieving unity and strengthening its political standing.
