LP Crisis: Former NLC President Omar to Lead Labour Party Transition Committee
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has appointed its former president, Abduwaheed Omar, to head a Transition Committee aimed at revitalizing the Labour Party amidst ongoing internal turmoil. The decision was announced by the NLC’s Political Commission.
National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh declined to comment on the development.
The committee, chaired by Omar, is tasked with organizing a comprehensive national convention within the next three months. Joining Omar are Prof. Sam Amadi and Abiodun Olamosu as Co-chairmen, and Mr. Nnawuihe Nwauwa as Secretary.
Peter Obi, the party’s former presidential candidate, was represented at the meeting by his spokesman, Yunusa Tanko.
In a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, leaders resolved to establish 13 sub-committees to manage various administrative functions within the Labour Party. Prof. Theophilus Ndubuaku, Vice Chairman of the NLC Political Commission, stated that these measures were in line with the resolutions from the commission’s inaugural meeting.
“The stakeholders have unanimously resolved that former NLC president Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar should head the Transition Committee,” Ndubuaku said. “This committee will address the leadership vacuum in the Labour Party and commence work immediately.”
The leadership crisis follows the March national convention in Nnewi, Anambra State, where Julius Abure was re-elected as National Chairman, a result rejected by the NLC. Ndubuaku reiterated that the transition committee’s goal is to conduct a new national convention within three months.
Omar assured stakeholders of his commitment to revitalize the party, criticizing the previous leadership under Julius Abure. He stated that the transition committee would begin its duties immediately, developing a plan to restore the party’s integrity.
Regarding the legitimacy of the transition committee, Omar referenced the 2009 Labour Party constitution as their guiding document. He also emphasized the committee’s intent to maintain party interests in upcoming elections and confirmed Peter Obi’s support for their efforts.
Tanko highlighted the need for reconciliation within the party, underscoring Obi’s commitment to unity and transparency in party affairs.
