Prison experts have provided insights into the alleged decision to place controversial Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, in a separate apartment during his six-month prison sentence.

Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show, Bishop Kayode Williams, Director General of the Prison Rehabilitation Mission, explained the various accommodations available in Nigerian prisons. He noted that certain inmates, such as those on death row, are housed in separate cells to ensure their isolation from the general prison population. Bishop Williams elaborated, saying, “Considering Idris’s transgender appearance, housing him in a general male prison would pose significant safety risks. His feminine appearance could attract unwanted attention from other inmates, particularly those with a history of sexual offenses.”

Francis Enobore, former National PRO of the Nigerian Correctional Service, echoed Williams’ concerns. He confirmed that the prison service profiles inmates to ensure their safety and maintain security within the facility. “While Bobrisky identified as male in court, his outward appearance raises serious security concerns. Placing him in the general prison population could lead to dangerous situations, given that some inmates are known to be unrepentant homosexuals.”
