Violent Clash Erupts Between Security Forces and Herders, Leaving Several Dead in Oyo State

Apalokun village in the Iwerele, Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State witnessed a tragic incident as a violent clash erupted between local security forces and a group of Fulani herdsmen, resulting in multiple casualties. The clash, which occurred on Saturday, October 14, has left the community in a state of panic.

The conflict began when a group of Fulani herdsmen invaded a local farm with their cattle, leading to a dispute that eventually claimed the life of the farm’s owner. The argument also resulted in the destruction of crops worth thousands of naira.

Local security agencies, including Operation Burst, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Amotekun, and Soludero, were called in to restore peace in the area. However, these security forces were reportedly ambushed by the Fulani herdsmen during their mission, resulting in several fatalities and numerous injuries. The identities of the victims remain unknown at this time.

A respected community leader, who chose to remain anonymous, stated, “The matter is being investigated by the various security agencies in the state, and updates will be provided at the appropriate time. The heads of these security agencies have held meetings with relevant stakeholders, including representatives of the Fulani community and local leaders.”

Amid the chaos, a government source expressed deep concern over the violence, noting that “Many people were killed.” The source went on to mention former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent remarks about traditional rulers, emphasizing the need for a lasting solution to the ongoing violence.

Efforts to obtain a statement from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to phone calls or text messages at the time of this report.
