Vietnam-Based Nigerian Killed in Abia Communal Clash During New Yam Festival
A Vietnam-based Nigerian, Samson Nwaubani, has been killed in a communal clash between the Okwu and Umuajata communities in Umuahia, Abia State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, August 27, during the annual New Yam festival in Olokoro. Sources said the clash began after a disagreement between residents of the two communities escalated into violence.
Eyewitnesses reported that Samson and other youths from Okwu were en route to the festival when they were allegedly ambushed by suspected Umuajata youths. The confrontation quickly turned violent, with Samson reportedly stabbed in the neck and macheted in the arm, leading to his immediate death. Several others sustained injuries during the attack.
A source familiar with the situation told SK Blog that the ongoing festival, which takes place in phases, became the backdrop for the confrontation. “The fight broke out around the Umuajata area as Samson and some men from Okwu were heading to the festival. Unfortunately, he was attacked and succumbed to his injuries on the spot,” the source said.
Another source added that the clash was linked to a longstanding dispute between the Okwu and Umuajata communities. “Elders had intervened earlier to settle their differences and warned them against escalating the conflict. Despite this, tensions flared during the festival, resulting in the death of Samson and injuries to others,” the source explained.
The attack also reportedly led to the destruction of some properties in Umuajata. Security agencies are yet to release an official statement on the incident.
