Unrest in Abia: Unknown Gunmen Kill Soldier in Aba
A Nigerian soldier has been shot dead in Aba, Abia State, intensifying anxiety across the state just a day after the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu to life imprisonment.
Military sources identified the victim as Lance Corporal David, reportedly attacked on Friday while visiting his family home on Ngwa Road, Aba. The incident occurred around 2 p.m.
According to sources, David was on pass and recovering from an illness when unidentified gunmen stormed the residence and killed him.
Security personnel in the area have been advised to remain vigilant, especially when off duty. Soldiers traveling to the South East have also been urged to exercise extreme caution and limit unnecessary movements.
Kanu’s conviction on seven terrorism-related charges, delivered by Justice James Omotosho, has sparked strong reactions across the South East. The ruling has added to existing tension in a region already grappling with recurring attacks, kidnappings, and targeted killings carried out by armed groups.
While the Nigerian government continues to blame IPOB for the violence, the group has repeatedly denied any involvement.
Meanwhile, former Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka has appealed for calm, urging residents and supporters to avoid actions that could worsen the situation. He emphasized the need for restraint, noting that violence would only deepen existing losses.
Security forces remain on alert as investigations into the soldier’s killing continue.
