Two Drivers Honoured in Abia for Foiling Robbery on Expressway

Two Coaster bus drivers have been commended and rewarded by the Cooperative Motor Union of Abia State after successfully thwarting a robbery attempt on their passengers along the Aba-Umuahia section of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. The drivers were praised for their bravery and quick thinking during a life-threatening incident that led to the arrest of six armed suspects.

The robbery attempt occurred when six men, pretending to be regular passengers, boarded two Coaster buses traveling from Aba to Umuahia. Split across the two vehicles, the suspects tried to hijack the journey by threatening the drivers at gunpoint and demanding they stop at a secluded spot. However, the first driver, sensing danger, defied the order and instead sped toward the Isialangwa military checkpoint. His decision paid off, as soldiers at the checkpoint searched the vehicle and apprehended the armed men.

Thanks to timely communication between the two drivers, the remaining suspects in the second bus were also intercepted by military personnel and taken into custody. No passengers were harmed in the incident.

In recognition of their heroism, Mr. Chukwuma Azode, President of the Cooperative Motor Union in Abia State, presented cash rewards to both drivers and granted them special loading privileges at the motor park. He attributed their success to the union’s ongoing safety and security training programs.

“This act of courage is a clear result of the consistent orientation and safety training we give our drivers,” Mr. Azode said. “They did not just save their own lives; they saved every single passenger and helped our security forces capture men who intended to cause harm.”

Mr. Azode also called on all commercial drivers in the state to emulate this example by staying vigilant, acting quickly in dangerous situations, and reporting suspicious behavior to authorities.

“Let us not allow evil men to destroy the good works going on in Abia. It is our responsibility as citizens to fish out criminals who want to drag us back into darkness,” he added.
