“Tinubu is doing well because what he promised people is exactly what he is doing” – Peter Obi Mocks Current Administration

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has taken a sarcastic swipe at President Bola Tinubu’s administration, claiming the president is fulfilling his promises to Nigerians. Obi, who was speaking as a guest on Arise TV on Tuesday, remarked that Tinubu’s actions align closely with his campaign pledge to continue the policies of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose tenure was widely criticized for its lack of direction and effectiveness.

Obi noted that Tinubu’s government has stayed true to his commitment to build on Buhari’s legacy, despite the economic difficulties Nigerians are facing. “He [Tinubu] is doing well because what he promised people is exactly what he is doing; that he would start and continue from where the previous government stopped,” Obi said, referencing the significant challenges Nigerians continue to experience.

The Labour Party candidate highlighted the worsening exchange rate as a key example of the administration’s impact, pointing out that under Tinubu’s watch, the value of the naira has plummeted from 300-400 to 1,500 to the dollar. He jokingly praised the president’s achievements, calling it “fantastic.”

Obi went on to express confidence that the situation could be turned around by a leader with competence and compassion, pledging to address Nigerians directly at least once every month if he were in charge. Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidies on his first day in office, followed by the floating of the naira, triggered widespread economic shocks, including inflation and higher living costs, which have further burdened Nigerians. Additionally, adjustments to electricity tariffs have raised concerns, as many citizens worry about paying higher rates without a corresponding improvement in power supply.
