“Threats Can’t Stop Wedding,” Asserts Former Commissioner Amid Controversy Over 100 Girls’ Marriage

Jonathan Vatsa, a former commissioner for information and culture in Niger state, has affirmed that the planned wedding of 100 girls in the state will proceed despite opposition.

The controversy arose after Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, the speaker of the Niger state house of assembly, distanced himself from the event following threats of legal action from Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, minister of women affairs, who vowed to sue the United Nations (UN).

Kennedy-Ohanenye objected to the wedding, asserting that the girls should be prioritized for education or vocational training.

Sarkindaji, who initially supported the event financially and was set to host it on May 24, withdrew his backing, stating that the decision rested with the parents and traditional leaders.

In a press conference on Wednesday, Vatsa, a prominent member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), cautioned Kennedy-Ohanenye against meddling in affairs she was unfamiliar with.

He argued that the minister lacked insight into the girls’ circumstances and should have conducted thorough research before issuing threats.

Vatsa emphasized that the parents were determined to proceed with the marriages, despite any legal repercussions threatened by the minister.

He criticized Kennedy-Ohanenye for potentially discouraging assistance to families in need and interfering with local customs and traditions.

Vatsa highlighted the prevalence of orphaned children and widowed individuals due to insecurity in the state, urging the minister to witness their plight firsthand.

He urged Sarkindaji not to yield to pressure and assured him of public support for his decision to assist the families.
