Senate Approves President Tinubu’s $500 Million Loan Request for Mass Metering Programme

The Senate has granted approval to President Bola Tinubu’s request for a $500 million loan. This financial injection is earmarked to fuel the federal government’s ambitious mass metering program.

Under the stewardship of Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, the plenary session saw a majority voice vote in favor of the loan, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s infrastructure agenda.

The deliberations culminated in the approval of funds for the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), a decision reached after careful consideration of a report by the Committee on Local and Foreign Debt, expertly presented by Haruna Manu, the committee’s vice chairman.

President Tinubu had initially sought permission from the National Assembly last November for a total loan of $7.94 billion and €100 million. This latest approval underscores the Senate’s ongoing support for initiatives aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s economic development.

Despite initial delays due to the absence of BPE officials during committee hearings, Senator Manu, representing Taraba Central Senatorial District, emphasized that stringent terms and conditions would safeguard against any misuse of the loan. He further asserted that the infusion of funds would fortify Nigeria’s economic resilience and underscore its sovereignty.

Following the presentation of the committee’s report, Senator Manu recommended the loan’s approval, stressing the importance of transparent execution and adherence to due process. His recommendation garnered resounding support during the subsequent vote, reaffirming the Senate’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s infrastructure agenda.
