Kano Hisbah Board Bans Male DJs from Female-Centric Events
The Kano State Hisbah Board, colloquially known as the Sharia Police, has taken a decisive step by prohibiting male Disc Jockeys (DJs) from participating in events predominantly attended by women throughout the state.
The announcement was made by the Commander General of the Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, during a meeting convened with representatives of DJs operating within the state.
Sheikh Daurawa underscored the rationale behind the ban, citing religious and moral grounds to prevent the mingling of men and women during public gatherings. He reiterated the state’s commitment to upholding Islamic principles and values, emphasizing the importance of adhering to standards that align with Islamic teachings.
Explaining the directive further, Sheikh Daurawa clarified that henceforth, only female DJs would be permitted to oversee women’s gatherings, as part of efforts to maintain gender segregation in line with Islamic precepts.
“As an Islamic state, it is incumbent upon us to discourage any form of indiscriminate mixing of genders at public events, as such actions can potentially promote moral decadence,” remarked Sheikh Daurawa.
Prior to instituting the ban, the Hisbah Board engaged in consultations with proprietors and managers of event venues across the state to apprise them of the regulatory framework governing their operations.
In response to the directive, Ibrahim Abdullahi, also known as DJ Farawa, representing the DJ community, expressed gratitude to the Hisbah Board for their guidance and outreach efforts.
Acknowledging the significance of complying with the new regulations, Abdullahi stressed the importance of respecting prayer times and upholding gender segregation during public gatherings. He urged all DJs operating within the state to register with their union to ensure adherence to the Hisbah’s guidelines, emphasizing that non-compliance would not be tolerated.
