Major Market Shut as Bandits Blow Up Only Bridge Linking Two Niger Communities
A key bridge connecting Wawa and Luma communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State has been destroyed in an overnight attack by suspected bandits, disrupting movement and trade in the region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, cutting off the only access route between the affected communities. Residents are now unable to travel between the towns, raising concerns about access to essential services and supplies.
The destruction has also halted activities at the Babanna border market, a major trading hub that operates every Monday. Traders and buyers were unable to gather due to the damaged bridge, leading to immediate economic losses.
A local resident described the situation as severe, noting that the bridge was central to daily life in the area, supporting both commerce and social connections among nearby communities.
Authorities have been urged to act quickly. Community members are calling on both federal and state governments to rebuild the bridge and restore access.
Police confirmed the attack, stating that explosive devices were used. According to the Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, a report was received at about 6:30 a.m. indicating that the attack took place around 2:00 a.m. along Luma Road, affecting the route linking Luma, Babanna, and Agwara.
Police said the destruction appears aimed at disrupting ongoing security operations in the area.
Security agencies have since intensified clearance operations and are monitoring the situation, with assurances that efforts are underway to maintain safety and restore order.
Niger State has experienced a rise in violent incidents in recent months, including attacks on communities and markets, placing additional pressure on local security systems.
