Suspended Nigerian Minister, Betta Edu Threatens BBC News with $50 Million Lawsuit Over Defamation Allegations
The suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, has issued a stern warning to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), indicating her intention to pursue legal action for alleged defamation.
In a letter addressed to the BBC’s offices in Abuja and London, signed by her counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Edu contested the accuracy of a recent BBC report. The report claimed that N30 billion had been recovered from the suspended minister as part of an ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Edu’s lawyer argued that the publication, which he deemed false, had severely damaged his client’s reputation. He stated, “Our client has suffered immeasurable reputational damage, psychological trauma, and anguish as a direct consequence of the publication and dissemination of the article.”
Furthermore, Edu is demanding $50 million in compensation from the media organization for the alleged defamation.
The letter expressed deep concern over the BBC article titled “Betta Edu Probe: Nigeria Recovers $24m in Poverty Minister Investigation – EFCC,” published on the BBC website. It criticized the article for implying Edu’s guilt without allowing for the presumption of innocence, a fundamental principle in fair reporting.
Edu’s legal team emphasized that their client has neither been indicted nor found culpable of any financial impropriety related to her tenure at the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. They refuted the claim that N30 billion had been traced to or recovered from her bank accounts.
The BBC article’s headline, content, and tone were described as a blatant attempt to tarnish Edu’s reputation and undermine her credibility, without concrete evidence to substantiate the allegations.
Following the publication of the contentious article, Edu reportedly received numerous calls and messages expressing shock and consternation from friends and associates. The letter underscored the significant reputational damage suffered by Edu due to the dissemination of the article by the BBC.
