BBC Apologises to Trump Over Panorama Edit but Rejects $1 Billion Claim
BBC apologised to US President Donald Trump after acknowledging that a Panorama documentary used an edit that wrongly suggested he had urged violence, but the broadcaster refused his demand for compensation. The correction appeared in its “Corrections and Clarifications” section on Thursday evening, confirming that the programme had been re-examined following criticism of how Trump’s 2021 speech was cut.
The documentary, *Trump: A Second Chance?*, included a line in which he said, “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol… and I’ll be there with you. And we fight. We fight like hell.” A leaked internal memo later revealed that the quoted lines were taken more than 50 minutes apart, omitting his earlier call to “cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women.” The memo, cited by former BBC editorial adviser Michael Prescott in the *Telegraph*, sparked a scandal that led to the resignations of director general Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness.
Trump’s lawyers sent a letter on Sunday demanding the BBC retract the documentary by November 14 or face a lawsuit seeking at least $1 billion, arguing the edit inflicted severe financial and reputational damage. In its response, the BBC emphasised a personal letter of apology sent by chair Samir Shah to the White House but firmly rejected any grounds for defamation or compensation. A spokesperson said the corporation will not rebroadcast the programme and reiterated its regret over the editing decision.
Pressure has continued to mount on the BBC board, accused of moving too slowly to address the error. The fallout has intensified alongside renewed scrutiny of the broadcaster’s Arabic-language coverage of the Gaza conflict and criticism of its reporting on trans issues. Turness previously conceded mistakes were made but dismissed claims of institutional bias.
