Electricity Tariff Surge: 20% of Band A Customers Meterless

As Nigeria adjusts to the new electricity tariff regime, concerns arise over the plight of over 20% of consumers categorized as Band A who lack prepaid meters, leaving them vulnerable to estimated billing practices. This revelation comes amidst challenges in meter availability and fears of economic repercussions, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Band A customers, accustomed to a minimum of 20 hours of daily electricity, face a staggering 230% tariff increase, raising rates to N225 per kilowatt-hour from N68. The absence of prepaid meters exacerbates the situation, as consumers are compelled to rely on estimated bills, a practice deemed opaque and prone to exploitation.

Dr. Musiliu Oseni, Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has urged Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to prioritize metering Band A customers. However, industry sources indicate that many DisCos struggle with immediate meter deployment due to meter shortages.

Amidst mounting frustrations, affected consumers, particularly SMEs, contemplate rejecting estimated bills and potential business closures in response to DisCo disconnections over unsettled bills.

Furthermore, Organised Labour contemplates revising its minimum wage demand following the tariff hike. The recent 300% surge in electricity tariffs undermines the previous wage benchmark, prompting Labour groups like the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) to reconsider their wage demands.

A member of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage revealed that the recent tariff hike renders their initial demand obsolete. Labour proposes adjusting the wage demand to align with the new economic realities, necessitated by the substantial increase in electricity tariffs.

This development follows earlier discrepancies between NLC and TUC demands across various geopolitical zones, highlighting the complexities of wage negotiations amidst evolving economic landscapes.
