According to a statement from Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Google West Africa, the report provides a unique insight into the nation’s collective interests and curiosities.
The Year in Search, an annual analysis by Google, highlights the most popular searches, trending individuals, and notable topics. On a global scale, Donald Trump topped personality searches, while searches related to death included names like Junior Pope and Herbert Wigwe.
Entertainment remained a significant focus for Nigerian internet users in 2024. Searches for movies such as A Tribe Called Judah, Treasure In The Sky, and Damsel dominated the charts, while television enthusiasts gravitated toward series like Supacell, My Demon, and Queen of Tears. In the music scene, Shallipopi and Khaid emerged as standout artistes, while “I Don’t Care” by Boy Spyce led the list of trending songs, followed by Ayra Starr’s “Ozeba” and “Commas.”
Nigerians also turned to Google to decode song lyrics, with Chandler Moore’s “Omemma,” “Ozeba,” and the viral hit “Ogechi” leading the category.
Beyond entertainment, Nigerians showed a continued interest in political and economic issues. The U.S. presidential election, Nigeria’s new national anthem, and national grid issues ranked among the top news-related searches. Additionally, topics like the dollar-to-naira exchange rate and the recently announced minimum wage reflected economic concerns.
In the culinary space, Nigerians explored diverse recipes, with “Pornstar Martini recipe” being the most searched.
