Soludo’s Government Reacts to Death of Man Allegedly Brutalized by Tax Agents
The Anambra State Government has reacted to the death of Mr. Okechukwu Akaneme, a prominent community leader and former chairman of the Onitsha Federated Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who reportedly died from injuries sustained earlier this year during an encounter with individuals said to be enforcing tax collection.
Akaneme, who was also a former president of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, sustained a spinal cord injury in the incident and passed away last week after months of medical treatment. His death has sparked widespread concern and public outcry over the alleged role of tax enforcement agents in the tragic episode.
In an official statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the Anambra State Government expressed deep sorrow over Akaneme’s passing but clarified that the injury was not caused by tax agents. According to the government, the incident occurred during a police operation carried out to enforce a court order, and the operatives involved were attached to the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA).
“We are deeply saddened by his untimely demise, which we understand resulted from the scuffle between him and the police operatives attached to ASWAMA, who had gone for his arrest on the orders of the court,” the statement said.
The government praised Akaneme’s contributions to journalism, commerce, and community development, describing him as a respected figure who played a vital role in Anambra’s progress.
“On behalf of the Anambra State Government, I extend our deepest condolences to you on the passing of your beloved husband, father and pillar of the community. May his soul rest in peace,” Dr. Mefor stated.
The Information Commissioner also disclosed that the state government had previously supported Akaneme’s medical care with a financial contribution of ₦40 million and reiterated the government’s solidarity with the bereaved family.
“As you navigate this difficult period, please know that you are not alone. The Anambra State Government stands in solidarity with you. As the police are still investigating the matter, the government will continue expressing its compassion for the family,” the statement added.
The government concluded by calling for continued calm as investigations proceed and reaffirmed its commitment to building a more humane and just society in the state.
