Soludo Initiates Committee to Address Minimum Wage Concerns

Anambra governor, Charles Soludo, has taken a proactive step by establishing a committee to delve into the issue of minimum wage for workers within the state civil service. The decision was revealed during a joint press briefing held at the government House Awka, on Wednesday, by the state chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Humphrey Nwafor and Comrade Chris Ogbonna.

The meeting, attended by representatives from organized labour and Anambra State government officials, including the Governor, addressed various pressing issues such as wages, pension, and overall conditions of service.

Nwafor expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, stating, “At the end, we are happy to inform you that all the issues were settled amicably.” He highlighted the suspension of the contributory pension for both state and local government workers, along with the formation of a committee tasked with investigating pension-related discrepancies within an eight-week timeframe.

Regarding the minimum wage, Nwafor emphasized the importance of action over words, asserting, “Since 2019 and 2020 when the agreement was signed, it has been an issue.” He clarified that minimum wage calculations were based on take-home salary, confirming Anambra’s compliance. Additionally, a committee has been established to streamline wage matters, with representation from various stakeholders including NLC, TUC, and government officials.

Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, the Chairman of the committee and Secretary to the State Government, affirmed the Soludo government’s commitment to supporting workers. He assured that the transition to the new minimum wage would be seamless once announced, acknowledging potential delays associated with federal-level legislation.
