Shettima: APC Speaks on Speculation Over Tinubu’s 2027 Running Mate
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports suggesting that Vice President Kashim Shettima may be dropped as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the claims as false and speculative.
In a statement issued in Abuja on January 26, 2026, the party said it was concerned by what it described as a growing wave of media speculation over the 2027 presidential ticket, noting that the reports had recently escalated to the point where specific individuals were being named as potential replacements for the Vice President.
“Our attention has been drawn to growing media frenzy about possible replacement of Vice President Kashim Shettima as the running mate to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 General Elections,” the statement said.
The APC stated “in categorical terms” that the reports were “purely speculative, untrue and utterly baseless,” insisting that there was no discussion within the party about changing the presidential ticket.
The party also reminded the public that political activities related to the 2027 elections are not yet permitted under existing laws and electoral regulations.
“At this time, our party remains focused on supporting President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima in delivering the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement noted, adding that the government is concentrating on reforms aimed at transforming the economy and improving living conditions across the country.
The APC urged media organisations to exercise restraint and avoid giving prominence to what it described as rumours originating from “mischievous news sources of questionable provenance,” warning that such reports could promote unnecessary discord and confusion.
The party further called on ministers, senior government officials and party leaders to avoid making comments or taking actions that could fuel speculation about the 2027 elections.
“We call on our ministers, senior government and party officials to focus on their primary duty of diligent service to government and our party, and to bolster the success and achievements of President Tinubu,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.
