Video: FCTA Workers Picket Industrial Court as Strike Continues; Unions Attempt to Stop Wike’s Convoy While Escaping

Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Monday picketed the National Industrial Court in Abuja, intensifying their ongoing total and indefinite strike over unresolved labour issues.

The action followed an NLC directive declaring full support for the strike, which the congress said was necessitated by repeated violations of workers’ rights by the FCTA management and political leadership.

Labour leaders said the strike was triggered by the failure of authorities to resolve long-standing grievances, including unpaid promotion arrears, inadequate working tools, and poor welfare conditions across FCTA departments.

Protesting workers arrived at the court premises early in the day, chanting solidarity songs and calling for urgent intervention to break the deadlock between the workforce and the administration. They displayed placards with messages such as “Pay promotion arrears,” “Enough is Enough,” “No working tools,” “Abuja no be Rivers,” and “Wike must go!!”

Tensions later escalated at the FCTA Secretariat when members of the Joint Unions Action Committee and the Nigeria Union of Teachers attempted to intercept the convoy of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, as he exited the premises through a back gate. A video circulating online shows union members moving toward the convoy, prompting heightened security response.

The unions warned that the strike would remain in force until their demands are fully addressed, urging the relevant authorities to engage in meaningful dialogue to restore normal operations within the FCTA.
