“I won’t be intimidated” — Seun Okinbaloye breaks silence after Wike remark

Seun Okinbaloye, anchor at Channels Television, has responded publicly after a comment by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, triggered national debate over press freedom and political rhetoric.

The controversy began during a recent episode of *Politics Today*, where Okinbaloye discussed concerns about Nigeria’s political direction ahead of the 2027 elections. He warned that shrinking political competition could weaken democratic balance.

During a media chat, Wike criticised the broadcast, accusing the journalist of taking sides. In his remarks, he said he felt strongly enough about the commentary that he could have “shot” the presenter, though he later clarified the statement was not meant literally.

The comment drew backlash from media professionals and civil society groups, who described it as inappropriate and potentially harmful in a tense political environment.

Speaking publicly after the incident, Okinbaloye thanked viewers, advocacy groups, and organisations that expressed support. He also confirmed that both his employer and security agencies had engaged with the matter and provided reassurance.

He defended his on-air remarks, saying they were rooted in concern about democratic practice and the need for open political competition. He added that efforts to silence dissent, directly or indirectly, risk undermining public trust in the electoral process.

While acknowledging a personal call from Wike offering clarification, he maintained that statements suggesting violence in response to journalism are unacceptable.

Okinbaloye reaffirmed his position, stating that he would continue his work without fear or pressure, and that accountability journalism remains essential to public interest, even when it attracts controversy.
