Anioma State Likely to Become Sixth South-East State – Presidency Source

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is reportedly poised to approve the creation of a single new state, with Anioma State emerging as the most likely candidate, sources close to the presidency have told Vanguard

The proposal for Anioma State has gained traction as a measure to address long-standing concerns of marginalisation among South-Eastern communities. Sources say consultations on the matter are at an advanced stage, particularly among stakeholders debating whether the new state should remain in the South-East or be assigned to the South-South region.

Senator Ned Nwoko, a leading advocate for Anioma State, has urged Ndigbo to maintain unified support for the initiative. “This is a historic clamour that has never received this level of national attention,” he said. “It is a golden opportunity for the Igbo people to reunite with their kith and kin across the Niger. Over 90 senators have expressed full support for Anioma State.”

Currently, the South-East comprises five states, the fewest in the federation. Supporters argue that creating Anioma State would promote geopolitical balance, fairness, and better representation for the region. Opposition has come from some groups within Delta State, who argue that Anioma should be part of the South-South zone, which would then have seven states.

According to presidential sources, Anioma State remains the only proposal under serious consideration. The plan would designate Asaba as the state capital, though details remain subject to confirmation following consultations with the leadership of the National Assembly, which is reportedly favourably disposed to the idea.

A proposed alternative, referred to as ‘Anim-Oma State,’ would combine parts of Anioma in Delta State, the old Orlu Zone in Imo State, and Ihiala Local Government Area in Anambra State, with Orlu as the capital. Sources indicate this plan is not part of the current presidential consideration.

The initiative is framed as a response to concerns over imbalance and perceived marginalisation in the South-East. Presidential sources say President Tinubu is focused on achieving equity and fair representation, with Anioma State considered the most viable among requests for new states.

Senator Nwoko described the current momentum as unprecedented. “The level of attention and support this campaign has received makes it historic. Anioma State’s creation would mark a milestone in the political landscape of the South-East and for Ndigbo as a whole,” he said.
