Rivers Crisis: Court Reverses Suspension of Pro-Fubara Representative

The Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has overturned the suspension imposed on Awaji-Inombek Abiante, a member of the House of Representatives known for his allegiance to Governor Sir. Siminalayi Fubara, by his ward’s leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The suspension of Abiante, a lawmaker representing a constituency supportive of Governor Fubara, was initiated by the PDP’s Ward 1 in Andoni Local Government Area. The party accused Abiante of factionalizing the party, leading to his suspension. The resolution for his suspension was endorsed by key PDP figures, including the Ward Chairman, Dike Bara, and the Ward Secretary, Dokubo Jackson, along with twelve other executive members.

However, Abiante swiftly responded by filing a lawsuit contesting the legality of his suspension. On Friday, the court issued an interim injunction overturning the suspension and prohibiting any interference with Abiante’s party membership or rights within the PDP’s Ward 1 in Ngor Town.

Presiding Judge, Justice G.O. Ollor, issued the orders, preventing the defendants and their agents from meddling with Abiante’s membership status or impeding his participation in PDP activities at various levels, ranging from ward to state.

This reversal of Abiante’s suspension marks a significant legal victory for the lawmaker, affirming his standing within the PDP and ensuring his continued involvement in party affairs despite the initial disciplinary action taken against him.
