JUST IN: Supreme Court Upholds Suspension of Samuel Anyanwu, Kamaldeen Ajibade, Others, Voids March Convention and Abdulrahman Mohammed’s Chairmanship
The Supreme Court has affirmed the suspension of Samuel Anyanwu, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN, Umaru Bature, and Okechukwu Osuoha, bringing finality to a prolonged internal dispute within a political party.
In a unanimous decision delivered on Thursday, the court held that it does not have the authority to intervene in disputes arising from the internal administration of political parties. The judgment reaffirmed that disciplinary actions taken within a party’s constitutional framework fall outside judicial review.
As a consequence of the ruling, the court stated that all decisions, actions, and appointments made by the affected officials during the period of their suspension have no legal effect.
The court further invalidated the party’s convention held on March 29 and 30, 2026, describing it as having no legal standing. It also set aside the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman, stating that any documents or decisions issued under his authority are without legal basis.
Administrative measures taken by the suspended faction during the period in question, including committee appointments, financial approvals, and official communications, were also rendered void.
The judgment effectively restores authority to the party’s recognized internal leadership structure as it existed prior to the disputed actions.
In its directive, the court noted that relevant institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), financial institutions, and security agencies, should take cognizance of the ruling and refrain from recognizing any authority derived from the annulled convention or the invalidated acting leadership.
