Rivers Assembly: ‘You Do Not Exist’ Governor Fubara Declares
Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has challenged the legitimacy of members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, stating they would cease to exist as legislators if he chose to withdraw his recognition of them. His remarks came during a meeting with a delegation of political and traditional leaders from Bayelsa State at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
Governor Fubara criticized the lawmakers’ behavior towards his administration, asserting that their existence was contingent upon his acknowledgment, rooted in the Peace Accord initiated by President Bola Tinubu. He emphasized his commitment to peace despite facing intimidation and attacks, underscoring his role as a peacemaker in the ongoing political crisis in the state.
The governor highlighted his efforts to maintain peace, despite facing challenges at every turn, including the use of police intimidation and sabotage from some of his own commissioners. He also acknowledged the divine nature of his emergence as governor, attributing it to God’s intervention rather than any individual’s efforts.
The leader of the Bayelsa delegation, Senator Henry Siriake Dickson, emphasized the importance of unity between Rivers and Bayelsa, calling for the preservation of their cultural and political ties. He commended Governor Fubara’s efforts to resolve disputes between the two states and urged collective responsibility from both current and former leaders to ensure the prosperity of Rivers State.
Senator Dickson also urged leaders in Rivers State to seek counsel from their counterparts in Bayelsa and to support Governor Fubara and former Governor Nyesom Wike in their respective roles for the benefit of the region. He emphasized the need for Rivers State to emulate Lagos State’s pivotal role in the South-West, positioning itself as a leader in the South-South region.
