“I Remain Governor,” Fubara Reaffirms Commitment to Peace in Rivers

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed that he remains the governor of Rivers State, stressing that his administration will continue to prioritise peace, security, and the protection of lives and property.

Fubara spoke on Saturday in Port Harcourt while attending the final match of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament, where he served as special guest.

The governor said his government would not support any action capable of disrupting public safety, adding that it remains committed to delivering on its promises to the people of the state.

“What is important is that I am still the governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people,” he said.

He commended the organisers of the polo tournament, noting that the week-long event was completed without any security incident. According to him, the peaceful conduct of the tournament reflects the safety of Rivers State for residents, visitors, and investors.

“I am happy that you had your tournament for one week and there was no incident. It shows that Rivers State is safe, and that is the basic responsibility of government,” Fubara said.

The governor, however, expressed concern over recurring political tensions in the state, observing that they have coincided with the annual polo tournament over the past three years.

“It is unfortunate that each time this tournament holds, there is always a problem. In 2024, January was very difficult. In 2025, you did not come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the best, came with another challenge,” he said.

Despite the situation, Fubara assured that his administration would continue to function responsibly and support individuals and organisations genuinely committed to the development of Rivers State.

He also announced plans to upgrade the Port Harcourt Polo Club, which he described as having one of the best natural grass polo pitches in Nigeria.

Fubara urged participants and visitors, including foreign players, to enjoy their stay in Port Harcourt and help correct negative perceptions about the state by sharing accurate accounts of their experience.

The final match was attended by several dignitaries, including the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria. Polo teams from Nigeria, India, and Argentina participated in the tournament.
