Retaliatory Rampage: Bayelsa Community Devastated as Soldiers Avenge Okuama Massacre with Deadly Assault
In a retaliatory move, Nigerian Army troops have launched a devastating assault on the Igbomotoru community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. Reports indicate that approximately 11 individuals have tragically lost their lives in the onslaught, with numerous homes reduced to ashes.
This violent escalation stems from the recent massacre of 16 soldiers and officers in the Okuama Community of Delta State. Last week’s harrowing incident prompted swift and severe action from the military, who swiftly descended upon Igbomotoru, believed to harbor militants linked to the Delta tragedy.
According to eyewitnesses, soldiers arrived in five gunboats, targeting structures suspected of harboring the alleged militant leader responsible for the attack on military personnel in Delta State. The retaliatory assault follows the directive of Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, who ordered a comprehensive investigation and apprehension of the perpetrators.
Residents of Okuama, gripped by fear of reprisals, sought refuge in neighboring Ughelli as tensions escalated. However, their flight did not shield them from the military’s wrath, as troops proceeded to raze homes and instill terror in surrounding Bayelsa communities.
Survivors recount a scene of horror as soldiers indiscriminately opened fire on civilians before setting ablaze suspected militant hideouts. As the dust settles, the community mourns the loss of 11 lives, with efforts underway to locate additional casualties.
The aftermath of this military incursion leaves Igbomotoru in ruins, its inhabitants grappling with profound loss and uncertainty. One resident, devastated by the destruction, lamented the cancellation of a planned burial ceremony, symbolizing the profound disruption inflicted upon daily life.
Calls for government intervention echo through the grief-stricken community, pleading for justice and peace amidst the chaos. However, attempts to glean official responses from military spokespersons remain futile, with Major Adenegan Ojo of Operation Delta Safe evading inquiries.
