Residents Stranded as Flood Overwhelms Governor Otti’s Recently Inaugurated Road

The Udeagbara Bypass Road in Ahiaba Umueze Owuala, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, has been severely affected by flooding, disrupting local businesses and daily activities. The road, which was recently commissioned by Governor Alex Otti as part of a broader infrastructure initiative, has now become impassable following heavy rains over the weekend.

Motorists and commuters were left stranded as floodwaters caused gridlock, halting traffic along the busy route. Many expressed frustration as the road, initially seen as a beacon of progress for the state, now struggles with drainage issues.

The road was one of three newly reconstructed roads commissioned by Governor Otti, alongside Umuimo Road and MCC/Old Express Road, aimed at improving access to key areas in Aba and boosting the local economy. During the commissioning, the Governor had emphasized the strategic importance of these roads in easing traffic flow from the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway into Aba and supporting business activities around the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH).

However, only a few months after its opening, residents are raising alarms over the road’s deteriorating condition and its drainage system’s failure to prevent flooding. The community, which includes vital facilities such as ABSUTH, has been particularly hard-hit by the recurring waterlogging, making everyday life increasingly difficult for residents.

In a video shared by a local resident, Possible Nwaohamuo, the extent of the flooding was laid bare. Nwaohamuo appealed for urgent government intervention, highlighting the significant damage the flood has caused to homes, schools, and places of worship in the area. “The flooding is a disaster for our community,” he said, explaining how residents are now unable to carry out basic daily activities. “Our children cannot attend school, and our churches are submerged. We need immediate help from the government.”
